Need a Break??
I was coaching with one of my fantastic clients today. We had a rich conversation around the idea of being “behind.” Isn’t that just a terrible thought? Being behind? For me it conveys stress, pressure, and hustle. Certainly not enjoyment, gratification and satisfaction.
One of the really valuable concepts I have learned about, and now coach on, is the idea that time is not my enemy. Being able to luxuriate in it is a skill. A skill born of awareness and design.
Here’s what I mean. I become so much more efficient, and clear when I slow it all down. Instead of keeping my nose to the grindstone, I have taught myself that, while I continue to work hard, I also take the time to evaluate where I am, and if it's conducive to where I want to go.
I make any needed adjustments from THAT space, not from the idea that I am falling behind and need to catch up. See the difference? That’s the power of perspective. And that’s what I teach my clients.
So often the idea of being behind also brings up a feeling of being stuck, (isn’t THAT a great combo? Being behind and also stuck there?) C’mon!! Loosen up! Do not let that narrative have a say.
When the gloom of doubt beacons, I find it helpful to have power sentences at the ready. One liners, to reorient my brain to a place that allows for space and growth: I’m not always very good at it, but much better since I started to slow down and entertain options.
Here are some of my favorites:
I don’t have to have all of the answers now.
What is the most loving thing I can do here?
I can trust myself to figure it out one step at a time.
What else could be true here?
The answers will come to me.
I am open to the idea that this obstacle is a valuable lesson in the curriculum of my journey.
I am becoming a person who consistently puts out material in service to others.
My example will be helpful.
I can find good in struggle, but never suffering.
What about you? What are the wise/kind words you have for yourself (or others) when you feel behind, stuck or otherwise blown off track? Hit reply and share with me, I’d love to hear them!
